RiverMed Logo Comps

I worked with a agency who had a client that needed logo comps for a new urgent care clinic, named “RiverMed.” It was a challenge to combine two elements that didn’t seem to have much relationship: a river and medical care. To represent a river (water), I used a wavy line and to represent medical, I used the cross symbol that has stood for emergency care and first aid since the mid-1800’s.  The last two comps have a more subtle reference to water because the shape of the wave is created by the stethoscope’s cord.

Before the client had the opportunity to view these comps, their legal team informed us that they could not use the name “RiverMed”. Thus began another process to come up with a new name for their business.

Chocolate Covered Friendship

This project was a labor of love—Chocolate Covered Friendship by Bethany Thouin and Angela Fox published by Thomas Nelson, Inc. I art directed and styled the photography, working with photographer Scott Schrecker. The layouts were then created for the cover and interior spreads. The best part of course was sampling Bethany’s amazing truffles. I may have gained a few pounds just from viewing these scrumptious photos for several weeks.

Photoshoot for Awana

There are a few precious times in this business when you get to combine your job with something or someone more personal—this was one of those times! A friend and colleague, an employee of Awana, designed an ad using a stock image in the comp of a cute, earnest little girl. Turned out, the stock image was too expensive for their budget to purchase and pay to use continuously. As luck would have it, my god-daughter, just happened to be the right age and look of the girl in the stock image. We decided that we should loosely re-create and maybe even improve upon the stock image. I art-directed the shoot and Amber Beckham Photography shot the images. My god-daughter, who is an actress, had never modeled before, but was a willing and sweet participant. The trick was to think of ways to communicate to a then seven year old the kind of expression that I needed. For instance one direction I gave her was this, “can you show me how you’d really like a bowl of icecream right now!” We strove to capture a range of expressions so that Awana would have a few images to choose from. We ended up having several images for the client to choose from and use as desired. I think the resulting ad is really eye-catching and of course she is just the sweetest girl on the planet—so how could you say “no” to her?

Book Cover for Thomas Nelson

The Extravagant Mind book cover was done for Thomas Nelson.

The book had a working title of Take Charge for my first round of comps.

Elige Triunfar Book Cover

I had the pleasure of working with Grupo Nelson on this book cover, Elige Triunfar. Translated, the title is Choose to Succeed: The Secrets Successful Women Follow. My initial comps contained either the image of the red heels or an image of eyeglasses representing the smart business woman. They chose the red heels. I love how the final cover is strong, bold, and yet clearly feminine.

From My Heart to Yours by Robin McGraw

Cover and interior layout for Robin McGraw’s book, From my Heart to Yours. I created the rich look and feel of this gift book using floral elements, patterns reminiscent of wallpaper, and colors that are both warm and rich. I utilized stock photography, but also scanned in pressed flowers for a authentic and organic feel.
